DogScroll Blog
News and Tips for Users

We have just released an exciting new feature that many of our users, particularly Service Dog Trainers have requested: training reports.

If you like to be able to

  • view your training data also on your computer,
  • print it out,
  • review it with others,
  • send reports to the head of your group,
  • import the data into other reporting tools,
  • or just archive your records somewhere else than on you phone

then this is the feature you have been waiting for. Our goal was to design this very flexibly, so it can be applied to many different use cases. But we are also looking forward to your feedback to understand how you use it, and if there is some fine-tuning we can do to meet your needs.

Creating a Report

Select your dog and navigate to the training log. In the main menu, select "Reports". A new view opens allowing you to select the parameters for your report:reports en

  • format,
  • date range,
  • activities to be included,
  • information to be included,
  • report destination.

We aimed for making this function very flexible, so there are a number of options. Make the selection according to your requirements and tap the "Create Report" button on the bottom. The report is saved to your device and if you like also emailed to an address you specify.

Report Format

You can create reports in various formats to be used as provided, to be organized in tables and spreadsheets, or to be imported into other reporting tools. If you are not familiar with all of the following formats don't worry. The first option is most likely what you are looking for.

Formatted Text (rtf)

This is the most human-readable format, presenting your data in formatted text. RTF is a format defined by Microsoft® that has been around for some time, and it is supported by word processors on most computer systems. It is also the default document format for WordPad, which is included in most versions of Microsoft Windows®. It allows you to view, print, and edit the report. This is the easiest option.

Delimited Text (csv)

Delimited text is a format that holds your data as plain text organized in rows and separated with, in this case, commas. CSV stands for comma-separated values. The format is typically used for loading data into spreadsheet programs, where it can be organized, sorted, and analyzed in tables. In most cases, you can just open the generated report, and your spreadsheet program will load it correctly. However, depending on your program or language and location, different character sets and different symbols for separating the values may be used. Data may not appear in columns or special characters may not be shown correctly. It is not a limitation of DogScroll. In this case, use the import function of your spreadsheet program to import the data from the file, and specify the separator character (comma) and the character set (UTF-8).

Markup (xml) and Java Script Object Notation (json)

These are formats used for importing data into other systems. While they still hold your data in a somewhat readable format, they are not really meant to be used as-is.

Date Range

Select here the training dates you want to include in your report. If you include a lot of records, the document may become pretty large. If creating the report takes very long (particularly on lower-end devices) or if you hit memory limits, break up your reports into smaller ones.

Activities

Tap the activities field. A dialog box opens, allowing you to select one or seveal of the activities you defined.

Information to Be Included

You can easily edit the generated reports independent of the format, so you could just use the default selection. But if you have an idea what information you want to see in your reports you can choose the individual bits here.

Report Destination

In any case, your report will be saved to the documents folder on your phone. Optionally, you can choose to have the report emailed as an attachment to an address of your choice. An email program must be installed and configured on your device. When you select this option, enter the receiver address, and you will be guided through the process.

Where to Find the Report after It's Generated

If you have selected the email option, obviously the receiver of the email will get a copy of your report. In any case, the report is saved to the Documents folder on your device. With suitable apps you can view and process the report on your phone. The best way to access it is to connect your phone to a computer and copy the file. Once on your computer, the file can be viewed, printed, and processed in any way your computer allows.
